Finding coins from around the world circulating here in the U.S. has always fascinated me.  Maybe it's just me, but I tend to know what I'm paying with - and wouldn't try to use another country's currency.

An inconvenient truth

Texas Stars Hockey

We all went to see the Texas Stars play tonight.  It was the first hockey game for the kids.  Everyone had a blast.  I think Samuel enjoyed getting the cheerleaders' autographs almost as much as he enjoyed the game.

Exemplary Evening at school

The kids had a little program tonight at school.  They got to show the parents a bit of what they learn at school, and take home a lot of little activities that allow them to practice the same skills at home.

Afterwards, I went and got us barbecue for dinner.  Now I feel all bloated because I ate way too much.  I think I'm just going to skip eating tomorrow.

War nickels are hard to find these days

The high price of silver has really got people hoarding them I suppose.  Silver today closed at $26.83, which makes each wartime silver nickel worth just over $1.50 in silver content alone.  Of course, depending upon the condition, the numismatic value can be much higher.

Minute to Win It

So, this evening at church our Sunday School class did a Minute to Win It competition between the guys and the girls.  Everyone had lots of fun and plenty of embarrassing pictures were taken.  Hopefully none of me...

But...the chocolate cake from Jessica's birthday on Thursday coupled with the potluck tonight wreaked some serious havoc on my diet.  I only managed to lose one pound this past week.  Time to step it up a little.

MLK day

Weekends are not good for diets

Had a great time in Waco

We all went up to Waco to meet family this afternoon.  We all had a blast a Poppa Rollo's Pizza.  If you ever get a chance to stop in Waco for pizza, I highly recommend this place.  Of course, it pretty much blew my diet for the day - maybe the week.

On a brighter note, Samuel got his stitches out today.  And even though his toe is still all purple and black, the doctor says it looks good.  I think we have different definitions of good though.  Thankfully, none of this seems to really have affected Samuel at all - just so long as he doesn't bump it on anything.

A Day for Resolutions

This year I have set two primary resolutions for myself.  The first will be to methodically read the Bible through in one year while having daily Quiet Times.  Jane and I will be holding each other accountable for this.  The second is to lose 75 pounds for the year.  I'll use this space to help hold me accountable for this one.

I love finding foreign coins while I search

It always amazes me how some of these coins wind up making it through all the sorting/counting/rolling machines before I get my hands on them.  It's even better when the exchange rate goes the right direction.  The 20 cent coin from Singapore I found tonight in a nickel roll is worth 15 cents.  Yeah, I know it's just a few cents - but the thrill of finding it is the most fun.

Samuel's surgery went well

He had a second osteochondroma removed from his left big toe.  The surgeon says he was a bit more aggressive this time, so hopefully it won't grow back again.

Back from Christmas Vacation

We just got back from 3 wonderful days in Fredericksburg.  We had a blast wandering around the town and visiting Trade Days.  We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather.

The kids went ice skating for the first time.  Samuel had fun right from the start.  Clarissa took a little coaxing though.  She did not want to get out there at first and almost refused to go all the way around.  It probably took her a good 30-45 minutes to make it around.  After she made it once though I made her a deal - two more times around and she could have hot chocolate.  She practically raced around the rink after that.  Of course, once they were done, Clarissa was the first to say she wanted to go back for more.

Found a nearly perfect coin tonight

The newer zinc pennies (those dated after 1982) are almost impossible to find in pristine condition once they have been in circulation for any length of time.  The zinc rots, literally leaving holes in the coin.  The copper covering is so thin it might as well be considered copper-plated.  Because it is so thin, any little ding goes right through it, exposing the zinc core.  The coins literally crumble away.

That said, I found a 2009-D LP2 (the one with Lincoln sitting on a log) that is nearly flawless.  I don't need it for my collection, but I'm keeping it since they're so hard to find this way.

The kids sounded like angels

Annual train ride to Burnet

Boy, we sure had a blast today.  The kids practiced one last time for choir for the Christmas program they're putting on at church.  Once that was done, it was off to the train depot.  The kids get so excited riding the train out to Burnet every year - it's really become quite the tradition.

The kids and Santa

I just love watching how excited the kids get over things.  After I picked them up from school, I let them know we needed to go somewhere.  Samuel immediately asked, "The mall"?  When I nodded, they both started jumping up and screaming about going to see Santa.  It was so precious.

Piano recital today

Samuel did absolutely fantastic.  He played both Vivace and Angels We Have Heard On High.  He picked Angels just last Monday evening and played it all the way through from memory this afternoon.  I'm so proud of him.

Finally found another Buffalo nickel

I was beginning to think the few I found previously was just due to beginner's luck.  Found a nice one tonight though with full date (no horn or tail though).

I also got in my subscription set of circulating America the Beautiful quarters.  I was a little bummed because one of them managed to break out of the plastic - but it doesn't look like any harm was done.  I'm going to break them all out anyway to put into a Dansco.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I have so much for which to be thankful.  I know that if I try to list it all, I would leave off something important.  So, I'll make it short and sweet.  After God's mercy, I am most thankful for my wonderful family.  Everything, and everyone, else is important - but those two take top spots.

Trips to see family

Managed to squeeze in a quick little jaunt down to San Antonio to see family.  Everyone had a great time, but boy am I pooped.  Seems the older I get, the more driving takes out of me.  Maybe that's just the stress from having to avoid some of the more moronic drivers.  There seems to be more and more of them all the time.  Thankfully all those prayers to keep us safe while traveling worked.

Home alone with the kids

Thursday night is Jane's night to go to Jessica's quilt store (the Cotton Cupboard in Lakeway).  She gets to spend time with her friends doing something she enjoys - and I get to spend time alone with the kids.  It's a win-win all the way around.

Piano lessons

It's really nice to come home and hear Samuel playing the piano.  It's amazing how good he sounds after just a few short months of lessons.  I can't wait to see how he does at his first recital at church - coming up December 4th.

Allergy medicine

My kid's birthday party

Clarissa had her birthday party today at Chuck E. Cheese.  It was a little late since her birthday was last Monday, but this was the first weekend day available.  All the kids had a blast though.

Working from home

I really am very thankful that I get to work from home most Fridays.  Not only do I get a lot accomplished with fewer distractions - but I get to pick up the kids from school as well.  There's really nothing like seeing your kid run across the playground just to give you a hug.

School Programs

Samuel's third grade class performed their patriotic program tonight.  It's nice to see the school instilling a little love for country into the children.  Now, if we could just get them to teach the real reasons why we should love our country...but that's another post.

School Spirit Night

Birthdays and WatchD.O.G.S

Today was Clarissa's birthday.  I took the day off and volunteered at school.  She was so precious standing up in front of the whole school and leading in the Pledge of Allegiance.  I asked her what her favorite part of the day was - she said, "Having lunch with you".  Guess I'm going to need to do this more often.

Coin shows

Today I am thankful for coin shows.  The kids and I had a blast at one today.  Jane wanted some time relaxing, so it worked out perfectly.  The kids got some stuff they liked - and so did I.  When we got home, the kids decided to play "Coin Store".  They even put up a little sign - "Coins and Dollers $20".  It was so cute.

The American voters

Today I am thankful for America's voters.  It looks like some common sense is starting to creep back into this great country.  Here's to hoping they'll be completely deadlocked in Congress and finally leave the rest of us alone.  Hey, one can hope, right?

Grandparents

Today I am thankful for grandparents - or more specifically, my kids grandparents.  We all got to spend some time with Grammy and Pop this evening.  Clarissa got some early birthday presents in her favorite colors, while Samuel got some neat coins from Pop!  Samuel also had a chance to show off his piano skills.

Let's start the new month out right

Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  So to celebrate - each day until Thanksgiving I am going to list one thing for which I am thankful.  Today I am thankful for my wonderful wife.  Every day she goes out of her way to make sure we all have everything we need for the day - whether it is food, clothes, or just a kiss on the cheek - she's there for us.  Thank you honey!
