Piano recital today

Samuel did absolutely fantastic.  He played both Vivace and Angels We Have Heard On High.  He picked Angels just last Monday evening and played it all the way through from memory this afternoon.  I'm so proud of him.

Finally found another Buffalo nickel

I was beginning to think the few I found previously was just due to beginner's luck.  Found a nice one tonight though with full date (no horn or tail though).

I also got in my subscription set of circulating America the Beautiful quarters.  I was a little bummed because one of them managed to break out of the plastic - but it doesn't look like any harm was done.  I'm going to break them all out anyway to put into a Dansco.

Trips to see family

Managed to squeeze in a quick little jaunt down to San Antonio to see family.  Everyone had a great time, but boy am I pooped.  Seems the older I get, the more driving takes out of me.  Maybe that's just the stress from having to avoid some of the more moronic drivers.  There seems to be more and more of them all the time.  Thankfully all those prayers to keep us safe while traveling worked.

Home alone with the kids

Thursday night is Jane's night to go to Jessica's quilt store (the Cotton Cupboard in Lakeway).  She gets to spend time with her friends doing something she enjoys - and I get to spend time alone with the kids.  It's a win-win all the way around.

Piano lessons

It's really nice to come home and hear Samuel playing the piano.  It's amazing how good he sounds after just a few short months of lessons.  I can't wait to see how he does at his first recital at church - coming up December 4th.

My kid's birthday party

Working from home

I really am very thankful that I get to work from home most Fridays.  Not only do I get a lot accomplished with fewer distractions - but I get to pick up the kids from school as well.  There's really nothing like seeing your kid run across the playground just to give you a hug.

School Programs

Samuel's third grade class performed their patriotic program tonight.  It's nice to see the school instilling a little love for country into the children.  Now, if we could just get them to teach the real reasons why we should love our country...but that's another post.

Today I am thankful for coin shows.  The kids and I had a blast at one today.  Jane wanted some time relaxing, so it worked out perfectly.  The kids got some stuff they liked - and so did I.  When we got home, the kids decided to play "Coin Store".  They even put up a little sign - "Coins and Dollers $20".  It was so cute.

Grandparents

Samuel had his first piano recital - and he did great!  Clarissa had her first play date with a friend from school and had a blast.  The kids' school had their annual fall festival and the kids just loved playing there.  Then we went grocery shopping.  And, I still managed to do my bank runs this morning.

Fun shopping at Central Market today

We all love going here for grocery shopping.  They have the freshest fruits and veggies in town - not to mention some of the strangest.  Picked up some white eggplant and orange tomatoes - but decided to pass on the purple asparagus.  They probably had 30 different kinds of apples.  Picked up some ground bison too - hopefully it tastes as good as promised.

A little slip-n-fall at Wally World

Yep - I decided to see what it would feel like to fall on my keister.  I see the dude mopping the floor.  I see his little mop bucket/buggy/thing all the way down at the end of the main aisle where he started.  I did not see a yellow Caution Wet Floor thing.  I didn't even see one in Spanish.  Why?  Because there wasn't one.  Still, I knew the floor was wet.

Remember how I said it was a main aisle?  So it was wide - at least wide enough for two weight-challenged people in motorized carts to pass each other.  See, I can't call them fat lazy lardasses anymore - that's not politcally correct.  Ahem.  What I did not see was that the brain surgeon mopping the floor wasn't just mopping one side of the aisle.  In one little one foot section, he had crossed over and mopped both sides.

So there I am - flat on back, left knee bruised, right ankle twisted, right hip aching, right wrist on fire.  I look back at the rocket scientist.  He has this look of utter fear on his face - something between "I'm gonna get fired for this" and "That guy is eventually going to get up and come shove this mop where the sun don't shine."  I have pity on him, gather what little dignity I have left, and hobble slowly away.

Slow start to new boxes

So, we picked the kids up this monring and it was the cutest thing.  Clarissa was curled up in a corner asleep.  They enjoyed swimming in the dark and Samuel loved staying up until 2 am watching movies.  The little toot stayed up later than we did.

So, as soon as we picked them up, it was off to piano practice for Samuel.  Once he was done, it was time for the trips to the banks - dumping and picking up new boxes.  From there, we went across town and had lunch at the mall before heading over to the Austin Quilt Show.  We must have spent around 3 hours just walking around.  From there it was a trip to Chili's for supper and off we went home.

Everyone was exhausted and turned in early - except for me that is... :)

When the kids are away - the parents will play

So, tonight we let the kids spend the night at the Y for their back-to-school campout.  Well, I suppose it's a campout - if you call sleeping in a sleeping bag on a gym floor a campout.  So far the parents have had a great time.  We'll see how the kids did tomorrow morning.

New boxes and a present from a teller

So, the teller at the bank where I deposit all the coins I didn't want for the week asked me what I look for.  I told her that I really just look for really old coins.  So she pulls out a couple of pennies and asks if I want them.  I say sure.  At worst, I'll just run them through the coin counter next week, right?  So, she hands me a 1943-D steel wheat penny and a 1941-D wheat penny.  Nothing spectacular - but it was a really nice gesture that I'll remember.

Where does the time go?

I look up - and it's tomorrow already.  Well, you know what I mean.  I'm beginning to feel like I need to either stay up extra long or spend a full day sleeping just to get back on track with the rest of the world.  It's like I'm operating with perpetual jet lag.

It seems like my days are more full than ever, with less down time where I can just relax.  I've only got 38-1/2 weeks of school left.  I've been going nonstop now for just over 4 years and I'm tired.

What's with all the water?

No sooner does the leak inside the house stop, than Hermine decides to drop more than 4.5" of rain (and still counting!)  I'm done with all this water.

If we wake up tomorrow and everything is still dry, I'll cancel the appointment with the plumber.  Luckily, it looks like there was no real damage except a bit of superficial damage under the sink in the counter.  Nothing major though that I can see.

Water leaks - oh my!

So we wake up this morning to find that the sink in the bathroom is leaking - and has been all night apparently.  I put in a service call to the home warranty company and they assigned a plumber to come out.  Of course, it's Sunday and tomorrow is a holiday, so I don't expect a call until Tuesday.  In the meantime the leak stopped...go figure.
