On a brighter note, Samuel got his stitches out today.  And even though his toe is still all purple and black, the doctor says it looks good.  I think we have different definitions of good though.  Thankfully, none of this seems to really have affected Samuel at all - just so long as he doesn't bump it on anything.

A Day for Resolutions

This year I have set two primary resolutions for myself.  The first will be to methodically read the Bible through in one year while having daily Quiet Times.  Jane and I will be holding each other accountable for this.  The second is to lose 75 pounds for the year.  I'll use this space to help hold me accountable for this one.

I love finding foreign coins while I search

It always amazes me how some of these coins wind up making it through all the sorting/counting/rolling machines before I get my hands on them.  It's even better when the exchange rate goes the right direction.  The 20 cent coin from Singapore I found tonight in a nickel roll is worth 15 cents.  Yeah, I know it's just a few cents - but the thrill of finding it is the most fun.

Samuel's surgery went well

He had a second osteochondroma removed from his left big toe.  The surgeon says he was a bit more aggressive this time, so hopefully it won't grow back again.

Meanwhile, my allergies are so bad I can barely breathe.  And when I do, it's usually just to sneeze.

Back from Christmas Vacation

We just got back from 3 wonderful days in Fredericksburg.  We had a blast wandering around the town and visiting Trade Days.  We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather.

The kids went ice skating for the first time.  Samuel had fun right from the start.  Clarissa took a little coaxing though.  She did not want to get out there at first and almost refused to go all the way around.  It probably took her a good 30-45 minutes to make it around.  After she made it once though I made her a deal - two more times around and she could have hot chocolate.  She practically raced around the rink after that.  Of course, once they were done, Clarissa was the first to say she wanted to go back for more.

Found a nearly perfect coin tonight

The newer zinc pennies (those dated after 1982) are almost impossible to find in pristine condition once they have been in circulation for any length of time.  The zinc rots, literally leaving holes in the coin.  The copper covering is so thin it might as well be considered copper-plated.  Because it is so thin, any little ding goes right through it, exposing the zinc core.  The coins literally crumble away.

That said, I found a 2009-D LP2 (the one with Lincoln sitting on a log) that is nearly flawless.  I don't need it for my collection, but I'm keeping it since they're so hard to find this way.

The kids sounded like angels

Annual train ride to Burnet

Boy, we sure had a blast today.  The kids practiced one last time for choir for the Christmas program they're putting on at church.  Once that was done, it was off to the train depot.  The kids get so excited riding the train out to Burnet every year - it's really become quite the tradition.

The kids and Santa

I just love watching how excited the kids get over things.  After I picked them up from school, I let them know we needed to go somewhere.  Samuel immediately asked, "The mall"?  When I nodded, they both started jumping up and screaming about going to see Santa.  It was so precious.

Piano recital today

Samuel did absolutely fantastic.  He played both Vivace and Angels We Have Heard On High.  He picked Angels just last Monday evening and played it all the way through from memory this afternoon.  I'm so proud of him.

Finally found another Buffalo nickel

I was beginning to think the few I found previously was just due to beginner's luck.  Found a nice one tonight though with full date (no horn or tail though).

I also got in my subscription set of circulating America the Beautiful quarters.  I was a little bummed because one of them managed to break out of the plastic - but it doesn't look like any harm was done.  I'm going to break them all out anyway to put into a Dansco.

Trips to see family

Managed to squeeze in a quick little jaunt down to San Antonio to see family.  Everyone had a great time, but boy am I pooped.  Seems the older I get, the more driving takes out of me.  Maybe that's just the stress from having to avoid some of the more moronic drivers.  There seems to be more and more of them all the time.  Thankfully all those prayers to keep us safe while traveling worked.

Home alone with the kids

Thursday night is Jane's night to go to Jessica's quilt store (the Cotton Cupboard in Lakeway).  She gets to spend time with her friends doing something she enjoys - and I get to spend time alone with the kids.  It's a win-win all the way around.

Piano lessons

Working from home

I really am very thankful that I get to work from home most Fridays.  Not only do I get a lot accomplished with fewer distractions - but I get to pick up the kids from school as well.  There's really nothing like seeing your kid run across the playground just to give you a hug.

School Programs

Samuel's third grade class performed their patriotic program tonight.  It's nice to see the school instilling a little love for country into the children.  Now, if we could just get them to teach the real reasons why we should love our country...but that's another post.

Today I am thankful for coin shows.  The kids and I had a blast at one today.  Jane wanted some time relaxing, so it worked out perfectly.  The kids got some stuff they liked - and so did I.  When we got home, the kids decided to play "Coin Store".  They even put up a little sign - "Coins and Dollers $20".  It was so cute.

Grandparents

Wow, what a busy day!

Samuel had his first piano recital - and he did great!  Clarissa had her first play date with a friend from school and had a blast.  The kids' school had their annual fall festival and the kids just loved playing there.  Then we went grocery shopping.  And, I still managed to do my bank runs this morning.

Looks like the car is going back into the shop

The main relay is going out - so sometimes...the car decides that it doesn't want to start.  Not exactly the most reliable mode of transportation at the moment, but we're working on it.

Had a small emergency today

Nothing too major - we just lost the recipe for Grammy's brownies.  I think it was really just an excuse for the kids to talk to her though.  Didn't mean to scare you Mom.  Of course, if it had been a real emergency - you wouldn't hear me saying we had an emergency - you would hear me screaming "AAAAAAAAA!!!!!!RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!!"

Fun shopping at Central Market today

We all love going here for grocery shopping.  They have the freshest fruits and veggies in town - not to mention some of the strangest.  Picked up some white eggplant and orange tomatoes - but decided to pass on the purple asparagus.  They probably had 30 different kinds of apples.  Picked up some ground bison too - hopefully it tastes as good as promised.

Couldn't find much tonight, but that's ok - there's millions more coins to search.  They make them faster than I can search them, so I'll never catch up.  But that's what makes the hunt all the more exciting.  Each little win when the odds are so stacked against you is that much sweeter.

So, while working from home today, I get a call from my boss.  Turns out I'm getting a bonus...that is just about equal to the cost of a new clutch.  He says that it was going to happen anyway, but they did move it up a few weeks.  Talk about a relief.

These were pretty decent boxes overall.  Of course, now I am looking forward to the new ones I'm going to pick up tomorrow.  I'm a bit disappointed though - I only need 11 more nickels for a complete set of Jeffersons - and I haven't been able to fill a hole now in about 3 boxes.
