New box Saturday and a couple of coin shop visits

My son and I went to a couple of different coin shops today.  I picked up a 1972 proof set at one, and got an Ike back in change.  I also got a 1947-S nickel, which I need in my Dansco.  Gotta love it.

My new favorite shop though is Capital Coin & Bullion.  If you're in Austin, give them a visit.  The owner is very friendly and personable.  He'll definitely get repeat business from me.

Saturday is new box day.  So on to the roll searching!

The wait is over! 99 year old coin found circulating

So, after a couple of lousy nights with nothing to really report - tonight was the jackpot.  A 1911 wheat cent, which is easily the oldest I have pulled from circulation.  99 years old and still running around.

Only coppers tonight

Where did all the old coins go?  They're certainly not in the bottom of these boxes.  Not a single coin older than 1959 tonight :(

5 rolls of nickels
Nothing, zip, nada

5 rolls of pennies
Just 46 pre-1982 coppers tonight

Nowhere to go but up tomorrow.  But for tonight, except for a little homework - I'm done.

Another Wheatless night

Sure hope to break this trend soon.  Finding wheats is almost as much fun as finding silver - not as lucrative mind you, just fun.

Here's what I found tonight.

5 rolls of nickels
1946 - a truly ugly coin, it looks like it is infected with some kind of coin-eating disease
1953
1954-S

5 rolls of pennies
35 pre-1982 coppers

Lovin' Monday

Busy at work all day.  The time always flies by when you're doing something you love.  Came home and got to play with the kids in the backyard with the waterhose.  Not sure who came out more wet - the kids or the dog.

Some good finds tonight, including a 1963-D in AU/BU condition - much better than the VF that was just replaced.

Here's everything else for the night.

10 rolls of nickels
1941-D
1948-D
1954-D
1956
1957-D
and a really ugly 1990-D with a huge die crack on the reverse, also infected with a lot of verdigris

10 rolls of pennies
62 pre-1982 coppers

That's the first night in a long time where I have been skunked on finding wheat cents in 10 rolls.  Let's hope it's just the prelude to a long run of good finds.

Lots of good finds today

Managed quite a bit of searching today - along with everything else a Sunday brings.  Church, lunch out with the family, grocery shopping, writing a 5-page paper for school - they all take time.

Busy day today

So...we all went out to Bastrop today for a fun day out on a Saturday.  Jane picked up some stuff at a cute littlequilt shop there (Lost Pines Quilt Shop), we visited a few antique stores, and had lunch at Maxines on Main, one of the 40 Best Small-Town Cafes in Texas as rated by Texas Monthly.  If you go - I can personally vouch for the ham & swiss on a croissant...and make sure you save room for pie.

On to the coins

New boxes!

My wonderful wife picked up a new box of nickels and a new box of cents for me to go through.  Thanks, honey - I love you!

On opening the (sealed) nickel box though, it appears to be a roll short :(  Will have to look into that - although I can't believe the bank will take my word for it.

Here's tonight's results:

5 rolls of nickels
1939
1957-D

5 rolls of pennies
1942
33 pre-1982 coppers

That's all for tonight.

Keeping track of things

So, I picked up two new boxes today - one of cents and one of nickels.  For those that are interested, I am going to keep track of and post all coins found that are older than 1959.  Why 1959?  In 1959, the reverse changed on Lincoln cents.  Wheat cents are quite difficult to find in ordinary change because people, like myself, pull them out of circulation whenever they can.  Also, pretty much the only pennies and nickels I still need were minted before 1959.

So, without further ado, here is what I found tonight:

10 rolls of nickels
1939
1941-S
1946
1956-D

10 rolls of pennies
1950-S
1952-D (2 found)
76 pre-1982 coppers

I also finally managed to find some 2009-D nickels.

A good night's searching

I went through 10 rolls of nickels and managed to fill another hole - 1959 from the Philadelphia mint and an absolutely gorgeous 1961-D.  The '61 is in much better condition than the one currently in my Dansco, so...in with the new, out with the old.

I also got through 5 rolls of cents and pulled a couple of wheats - 1953-S and 1946-S.  The '46-S is one I needed, but they're both keepers.  My copper collection just grew by another 27 coins.  I figure I'll stop keeping the copper when I reach a million coins, I die, or Jesus comes back - whichever comes first. :)

Nothing much tonight

15 rolls of nickels and managed to get a 1949-S.  One more hole filled.

5 rolls of Lincoln cents - well, except for the 2005 Canadian penny.  It's in remarkably good shape for being 5 years old and having traveled so far.  Other than that, just 31 coppers.

As promised - pictures!

I haven't had much practice taking pictures of coins - so these are not the best in the world.  I expect I will get better as time goes on.

Here are a couple of pictures of my 1970-S Jefferson nickels.  The one on the left shows what I consider the normal placement of the mintmark, while the one on the right shows the mintmark much lower.

And here is a picture of the 1970-S small date Lincoln cent.  It's quite difficult to photograph through a clear, reflective plastic cover - but it is sufficient to see that it is, indeed, the small date.

Thanks for looking!

Some good stuff tonight

Out of 5 rolls of Lincoln cents, I pulled a 1952-D wheat and 25 pre-1982 coppers (10%).  The '52-D was so worn you can barely see the wheat stalks - but you know me, I keep all the wheats.

I also went through 10 rolls of nickels.  I pulled a '41-S which I didn't need so am releasing back into the wild and a '53-D which I did need.  I also pulled out a 1970-S which has got me somewhat stumped.  The mintmark is in a different place than my other example.  Because of the lustre, I thought it might be have been a proof that someone started circulating, so I pulled out my 1970 Proof Set to compare.  It matched my other example as well.  I'll put up some pictures tomorrow when I set up the camera again.

On a much brighter note, I was shocked to discover that the Lincoln was the coveted 1970-S small date.  My July 2010 issue of Coin Prices has this listed at an even $100 - and to think when I paid $6.25 for this over a year ago and just now noticed it.  Pictures tomorrow for sure.

A box of nickels and a wheat penny

I ran by the bank today and picked up a box of nickels.  The teller was really sweet this time and told me good luck searching - finally, a teller that understands!

So, I went through 10 rolls tonight - found 3 or 4 that were 50+ years old, including a 1939.  Nothing I needed though - so back to the wild they go.

10 rolls of cents didn't go much better.  I found a really ugly 1944 wheat.  Since it was just covered in verdigris on the reverse, I didn't even bother taking a picture.  I did gather 81 coppers though, which is a bit better than average at just over 16%.

Nothing spectacular tonight

Best coin in 10 rolls of cents tonight was a nearly fully red 1960 large date.  No wheats, no foreigns, just 63 pre-1982 coppers - just less than 13%.

On the other hand, I finally decided to start looking at all of the 1992, 1992-D, 1998, 1999, & 2000 cents for wide and close AM's - nothing there either.

A couple of wheaties

Well, I went through 10 rolls of Lincoln cents with nothing special to report.

1938 which is a duplicate

and a 1951-D which is also a duplicate

Both have obvious problems, but I'll still keep them.

There were also 67 pre-1982 coppers - a little over 13%.

Here's hoping for better luck tomorrow.
